United Kingdom Broadens Toxic Alcohol Poisoning Advisory Roster with Eleven Destinations
The UK authorities has added eleven further destinations to its official alert list concerning the threats of toxic alcohol toxicity from tainted spirits.
The updated advisory now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following evidence showing "a worldwide rise in the frequency of documented incidents" of toxic alcohol poisoning.
Only a few weeks ago, officials had earlier included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing list, after a number of serious incidents such as the fatal death of 6 travelers in Laos in 2024.
Travellers are being warned that as little as minimal doses of industrial alcohol can lead to blindness or fatality within twelve to forty-eight hours.
Exactly what is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Used?
Toxic alcohol is a toxic substance often employed in coolant, windshield wiper fluid, and thinner. This substance is not intended for ingestion.
Although it is generated during the production of alcoholic drinks, commercial firms bring it down to low, safe levels for drinking through the refining procedure.
Yet in various destinations, it is illegally mixed into beverages to reduce expenses, and since it is flavorless and odourless, it is very difficult to detect.
Government Recommendations for Travellers
Foreign Office representative a senior official stated that all travellers should be aware of the indicators of methanol poisoning.
"While having drinks in foreign countries, stick to trusted places and steer clear of unlicensed drinks or unspecified beverages," the minister warned.
"Should anything feels off, such as a hangover that's far more intense than usual or blurred eyesight – get medical help right away."
The entire list of nations noted as posing a risk of methanol toxicity presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
